I did some thinking trying to find a situation that approximates the one we're currently in. I have seen some comparisons between Bush and Nixon but Nixon had an unfriendly legislature and I think we're limiting ourselves to comparing Bush to other Republicans. I think that a better analogy, while not perfect, is 1964 and the LBJ victory. While LBJ won a much more decisive victory than Bush won over Kerry I think that there are significant parts of the analogy that hold. I'm interested in other comments.
