My commentary: It was going to be interesting to see who reported their numbers first. If Trump really did raise $18MM in one day last month, he should have had a really impressive haul. If he kicked in $50MM of his own money as he was asked to do, he would have dwarfed Hillary’s numbers. That said, if you know you have better numbers you can either get them out early to try to make the other team’s numbers look bad, or you can wait to go second so that when the other side puts out their numbers you instantly crush them. Going first has a risk: If Trump releases a $200+MM haul for September he’s going to suck a bunch of oxygen out of the room. But I like the guts of getting numbers out there now. I also don’t buy Nate Cohn’s spin that this is somehow a negative because it’s below Obama’s numbers or that the 900k donors means she has fewer volunteers.
Update #7 — after seeing that Josh Schwerin is the National Spox for the HRC campaign, I’m putting the $150MM COH back in the title. He would know the real numbers.
Update #6 — here is where I got the original $150MM COH number from my original title — but based on the stories I linked below, he probably made same mistake I did, conflating the 9/1 date of the COH and the 10/1 date of the Sep Fundraising numbers.
